Pool surrounds for Charlotte.
Bluestone or natural-stone pool decks for Charlotte, Vermont properties — built for our freeze-thaw climate, with proper drainage, expansion joints, and Vermont-quarried stone.
— Why most pool surrounds in Charlotte fall short
Pool decks built for warm climates die in Vermont.
We see the same patterns project after project. Here’s what goes wrong.
Wrong gauge of bluestone.
1″ bluestone on a pool deck cracks at chair-leg pressure points. 1.5″ minimum, 2″ for serious decks.
Mortared coping that cracks.
Mortar doesn’t move; pool shells thermal-cycle. The coping joint cracks within five years.
No expansion joint at the pool edge.
Without a flexible joint between deck and shell, freeze-thaw cycles crack the connection.
Drainage to the pool, not away.
Surface water sheets toward the basin. Salt-cell pools get rust streaks at deck-edge tile within 18 months.

8″ base in lifts, geotextile fabric, integrated French drain to daylight away from the basin.
Coping + edge detail
Bluestone coping with bullnose or eased edge. Tight joints, polymeric sand.

Bluestone treads with hidden risers, low seating walls, integrated planters.
Sand-only winter maintenance
We document the no-salt protocol so the deck survives 30+ Vermont winters.

— Pool Surrounds questions
What Charlotte clients ask.
Do you install pools?
No — we install everything around them. We have two pool-contractor partners in Vermont we trust to coordinate with. The result is one point of accountability for the visible work.
Bluestone or travertine?
For Vermont, bluestone wins. Travertine is more porous and has freeze-thaw issues here, plus it’s almost always imported.
Salt-cell pool concerns?
Salt-cell water is fine on bluestone. The issue is when it sheets onto iron rebar or mounted hardware — we design pool surrounds to drain away from any iron.
How thick should the deck be?
1.5″ bluestone minimum, 2″ for high-traffic. The thickness matters because pool decks see point loads from chair legs and harder freeze-thaw at the edge.
Can you tie into existing pool deck?
Sometimes. Depends on existing condition. Often we tear out and rebuild because the existing base was undersized.
What about heating the deck?
Hydronic in-deck heating is possible — adds about $25-$35 per square foot. Works beautifully in shoulder seasons.
